Travel Tips
Niue Island

Niue Island is 259 km2 and is known as the smallest independent state in the world. Niue Island is freely associated with New Zealand.  The island is renowned to have the most beautiful limestone gorges of the South Seas, a pleasure not only reserved for the hiker or mountain bike rider, but for the ambitious Scuba Diver as well.

Getting Around

Niue has approximately 123 km of roads, of which 76 km are paved.  Driving is on the left hand side.  Vehicles, motor bikes, or scooters can be hired from Alofi Rentals www.alofirentals.nu or Niue Rentals www.niuerentals.nu both of which are located in Alofi.  Pre-booked cars can be waiting at the airport on your arrival.  We recommend visitors rent transport (cars, motor bike, or scooters) during your stay in Niue.  There is no public transportation on Niue and a very limited taxi service available but only during working hours.  Niue drivers licences can be obtained from the Police Station which is located in Alofi.

Climate

Dry season: April to November with an average maximum/minimum temperature of
27ºC/20ºC.
Wet season: December to March with an average maximum/minimum temperature of
29ºC/22ºC.

Money

The New Zealand Dollar is the legal tender on Niue Island.  There are no ATM cash machines, and only a few businesses accept credit cards (VISA only), so be sure you  have enough cash available.  There is one bank in Niue (Bank of South Pacific), and they will offer cash withdrawals against your credit card, however their is a fee attached to this.

Visa & Immigration

A passport with a validity date of more than six months is required.    Visas are not required by bona fide tourists staying less than 30 days with return or onward tickets and sufficient funds for the duration of travel to Niue.  Entry permits are granted for 30 days upon arrival.  Extensions are available.  A departure tax of $34.00 NZD is payable at the airport on the day of your departure for all persons over 12 years of age.

Local Customs

Visitors should dress appropriately and not in too risqué clothes. Wearing swim wear within Villages and the main town of Alofi is not accepted other than at swimming areas. A paleu (sarong) is often worn around swimwear in public.

Sunday is a day of rest, and many Niueans attend Church. Visitors are asked to be discreet in their choice of activities so as not to disrupt Sunday observance. There are laws that prohibit fishing, diving, and boating on Sunday, however swimming and snorkeling is accepted in most areas.

Electricity

240 Volts, 10 Amps. 3 pin plug.  Same plug as New Zealand and Australia.

Internet Cafe

Niue Island has 1 Internet Cafe at Rocket Systems which is located directly across from the Commercial Centre in Alofi.

Food / Restaurants

The majority of all food supplies are imported from New Zealand, and are brought in by ship once a month.  This necessity is reflected in the price of food, and the variety available.  Niue Island has one grocery store, and two small convenience stores in Alofi.  You can also purchase some groceries, and when available, fresh fruit and vegetables from the two petrol stations in Alofi.  The Pacific Way Bar in Alofi also sells fresh fruit and vegetables.  Fresh fish (i.e.: tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, marlin, moon fish) is also readily available from the Isreal Mart in Avatele.  On early Tuesday and Friday mornings, the local market in Alofi is open.

There are a limited number of restaurants on Niue Island.
